- Computer Banc began in 1999 with the support of a
local Springfield
(IL) church, and immediately began to grow.
- In March 2002, Computer Banc
received not-for-profit status.
- In August 2002, Computer Banc moved to
a larger facility in the rear of the Catholic Charities building at
11th and Washington. That giant step forward gave us the
space to
expand operations and provide more computers.
- In May 2003,Computer Banc held its first annual
Citywide
Collection to collect refurbishable computer equipment and equipment
for recycling. This event recurred at the same time every
year until new Illinois recycling law led to the final collection in 2008.
- In January 2004, Computer Banc became a Microsoft
Authorized Refurbsher, which allows us to provide fully-licensed
Windows operating systems on the computers we send out.
Computer
Banc is still the only Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher in Springfield.
- In October 2006, Computer Banc began its School
Partnership
Program with Decatur schools. Additional trips were made to
Decatur in March 2007 and January 2008, with trips to other schools
every few months.
- In
May 2007, Computer Banc secured a recycling
contract
with Sangamon County, which was renewed through May 2009. As a
result of the financial handicaps associated with new Illinois
recycling law, this partnership could not be renewed further.
- In December 2008, Computer Banc set a new record,
sending out over 425 computers in a single year.
- In July 2009, Computer Banc became a United Way certified agency.
- In December 2009, Computer Banc set another new record,
sending out over 600 computers in a single year. This brings the
organization's total distribution over 10 years to almost 3,000
computers!
- In September 2010, Computer Banc embarked on an academic study of home computers' impact on student success. The study, conducted by the University of Illinois at Springfield in cooperation with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Springfield School District 186, and United Way, should yield results in 2012.
Computer Banc will continue to
expand, providing hundreds or thousands more computers to Springfield
and surrounding communities.
