Announcing LLCC as First Participant in Computers for College Program
    Computer Banc recently launched its Computers for College program which provides economically disadvantaged college students with refurbished laptop computers. Computer Banc receives 1-2 requests from college students each week for computers, most often laptops.  The program goals are to distribute laptop computers to 150 college students in a year and become a permanent model for other programs in the Central Illinois community.

    Eligible students are required to have a zero score on their financial aid application underscoring their need. Laptops are provided using a sliding fee schedule based on the student’s ability to pay. This fee covers the typical refurbishing expenses not currently deferred by grant income.
    Currently, Computer Banc is working with area school districts, community colleges and universities to identify students with financial need. Lincoln Land Community College, the program’s first participating institution, serves some under-skilled and unemployed adults returning to school, single parents in school, and other students with difficult financial circumstances. Computers for College makes computer ownership a reality for these students. 
    Computer Banc tech volunteers use parts from broken laptops to refurbish the best laptops that are available. Once refurbished, laptops are also loaded with a new operating system, Windows XP Pro, and Microsoft Office Suite software. Many of the laptops also have wireless capability. 
    Refurbishing laptops present a unique challenge because, unlike desktops, their parts are not easily interchanged. This fact makes large donations of the same brand of computer particularly valuable. Donations from the business community meet this need so Computer Banc does accept laptops from businesses for the program.

Receiving a Computer is Now Easier!
    In order to expedite the process of providing computers to families, Computer Banc has removed the Family Orientation requirement from the requirements leading to the receipt of a computer.  Check out the newly updated process at the Families page.
